The original Phil and Teds in-line buggy is still going strong – and for good reason. With the all the flexibility you’d expect from an in-line stroller, the Classic is a great all rounder for those with children of differing ages and comes in at a price that is lower than you might expect.The Phil and Teds Classic is an economical and extremely practical in-line buggy. Not only is it stylish, streamline and compact, but it grows with your family, taking children of up to 4 years of age (or combined weight of 40Kg) – so there is no need to replace it should another child come along.
The Classic may be the most basic of the Phil and Teds in-line buggies, but it still packs a punch being perfect for use with one child or for a newborn and toddler. With the additional double kit options, this single pushchair can quickly be converted in to a very functional double, and back to a single again depending on your needs.
Being an in-line buggy, the Phil and Teds Classic is primarily set up to be single seated but in order to accommodate the familiar extra seat option, the position for the primary seat is relatively high. This will allow your child to get a great view of the world around them as they travel.
The Classic comes with a bumper bar that will give your child something to hold on to should the terrain get a little rougher, or they want to pull themselves forward to get an even better view or their surroundings.
In order to ensure the safety and comfort of your child, the primary seat comes with a quick adjust, 5 point safety harness and has three recline positions including one that would allow a child to lie completely flat.
The primary seat on the Classic is equipped with a ‘Follow-the-sun’ hood that wraps around your child ensuring protection from the sun at all angles. This hood also comes with a flick out sun visor that can be used when the sun is low in the sky and your child needs that extra bit of protection.
When a second child comes along, you can make use of various adaptors and a second seat kit (sold separately) that will allow your children to sit in one of the following ways:
It’s worth noting that with the second seat unit also comes with a 5 point safety harness and has a small sun shade that is sold separately.
When a second seat is connected to the rear, some in-line buggies have the tendency to tip backwards if the child in the front seat gets out. This is not the case with the Phil and Teds Classic and it has been specifically certified to carry one child in the back seat.
For a parent, the Phil and Teds Classic offers the size of a single buggy with the ability to accommodate an extra child when the need arises.
Weighing in at 11.5Kg (excluding second seat) the Phil and Teds Classic is certainly on the lighter end of the spectrum when compared to other double buggies.
It comes with the option to have the handle height set in two different positions to cater for parents of different heights.
Folding the Classic can be achieved using one hand and once collapsed it is relatively small considering the size of other double strollers.
The slim design makes the Classic easy to manoeuvre and does not pose any problems in getting through tight spaces or doorways. With three large pneumatic tyres and a single swivel/locking front wheel, this buggy can turn on the spot and be comfortably pushed whatever the terrain.
Although it doesn’t come with any suspension, the Classic can be considered a good buggy if you want to get out and enjoy the countryside with your family.
Used as a single buggy the Classic comes with a good sized shopping basket which is very easy to get to due to the slightly higher position of the main seat. The shopping basket does however disappear when the optional rear seat is attached, since your child’s legs will need to take up this space instead.
A further result of the extra seat is that hanging a changing bag over the handle bar is no longer an option since it will hang directly over the space where your child is sitting.
These drawbacks are not uncommon for in-line buggies. Being well aware of this, Phil and Teds have created the option to buy specially designed pannier bags that attach themselves to the side of the frame and are large enough to make up for the loss of the shopping basket.
For safety, the Phil and Teds Classic has a foot operated brake that can be engaged by either foot and in situations where you want to stay attached to the buggy, it also comes with a strap that can loop over your wrist – ideal for climbing or descending hills, those long country walks or maybe jogging.
The Phil and Teds Classic is a good choice for those who want to get out with the kids. Being well built and with it’s larger tyres you should be able to go that little bit further and not have to worry about facing terrain that it cannot cope with.
As a single buggy it will make a good shopping companion gliding smoothly around town and will cope well on public transport. However with the second seat option attached, you may find the Classic becomes somewhat limiting while trying to store shopping unless using the extra pannier bags that are sold separately.
Although the Classic only comes in black / charcoal, you’ll be able to add your own mark ans Phil and Teds produce seat liners that come in a range of great colours.
A travel bag made specifically for the Classic is available and should make air travel somewhat easier while also protecting your buggy from any knocks on the way.
Thinking about what to do with your buggy while it is not being used can be an important consideration for some.
When it is folded the wheels and bumper bar can be quickly removed to make the Classic more compact. As always, it is advisable to check the specifications of the buggy to ensure it will fit in any storage space (including car boot) you have in mind.
There is a handy strap included to ensure that the Classic doesn’t fall open unintentionally while being carried or stored.
Phil and Teds produce a comprehensive collection of accessories for their buggies which are available at an extra cost.
They include a popular clip on bottle/cup holder, food tray and tote bag which all come in very handy on days out with the kids.
Although a single rain cover comes included in the price it is possible to purchase a double rain cover for when the extra seat is attached.
As mentioned earlier, Phil and Teds have especially designed panniers which makes it easier to carry extra shopping or baby necessities.
Coloured cosy toes and seat pads are also available to keep your child warm and add a splash of individuality to your pushchair.
