Taking all the practicality of the Classic, the Explorer adds a wide range of improvements and extras that make this one of Phil and Teds most popular products to date.
The Explorer makes a great single buggy but as with all Phil and Teds in-liners, add the extra seat and it quickly turns in to a very capable double. Because of this flexibility, you can be confident that an Explorer will be used from the birth of your first child right the way through until your second (or even third) no longer needs you to push them around. Because of this, the Explorer can represent great value for money.
Just like the more basic Phil and Teds Classic, the Explorer’s main seat is set slightly higher that you’d expect to find on a normal single buggy – this is to create enough space for the legs of the second child to slide underneath when the additional seat is attached.
The main seat is a really good size. With a high seat back and the good amount of headroom below the sun canopy, the Explorer should remain comfortable for the tallest of children and prolong the usable life of the buggy compared to similar products from other brands.
The seat itself is equipped with an adjustable 5 point safety harness which is padded for that extra bit more comfort, and your child can rest their feet on a plastic foot rest.
You’ll be able to adjust the main seat to the perfect position since the recline mechanism is operated by a strap, meaning that your child can be seated at any angle between lying flat and sitting upright.
When in the lie flat position the parent has the benefit of being able to gain direct contact with the child. The downside of this is that the child can be dazzled by the sun in certain positions, so the use of the sun canopy or a blanket may be needed to prevent this.
Protection from the sun is always very important and the Explorer’s large wrap around sun canopy with an added flip out sun visor will shield your child well. The canopy has the ability to slide all the way forward for extra protection when the sun is low in the sky or maybe when a strong wind is blowing.
The sun canopy on the Explorer has two side pockets (but no peekaboo window) and can slide up the frame to provide even more head room should it be needed.
A padded bumper bar is provided for your child to hold on to and can easily be detached by compressing two pins on either side.
When a second child comes along, you can make use of various adaptors and a second seat kit (sold separately) that will allow your children to sit in one of the following ways:
It’s worth noting that the second seat unit also comes with a 5 point safety harness and has a small sun shade that can provide some protection from the sun for your child.
When a second seat is connected to the rear, some in-line buggies have the tendency to tip backwards if the child in the front seat gets out. This is not the case with the Phil and Teds Explorer and it has been specifically certified to carry one child in the back seat.
The Explorer is a great buggy to push. It’s large pneumatic tyres give it a smooth ride and it’s manoeuvrability means you will be able to weave effortlessly around town and navigate the isles of the shopping centre. Not only that, but take it off road and it will cope extremely well over uneven ground allowing you to get the kids out and explore.
To help while going over rougher terrain, the front wheel can both swivel and be locked in place. The easy to use foot brake can be activated by either foot and as an added safety feature, the Explorer comes with a wrist strap that connects you to the buggy to prevent it from rolling away should you trip or let go of the handle.
For comfort, the padded handle is fully adjustable so regardless of your height you’ll be able to quickly find your ideal position.
Getting packed away has never been easier with the Explorer since the introduction of the one hand folding mechanism. Under the main seat you will find a button that once squeezed will release the seat back and simply lifting the buggy will fully collapse it and automatically lock it in a closed position.
It is worth noting that the buggy can fold when the second seat is attached to the front, but not when it is fitted to the rear. When folded, the Explorer can stand by itself which will make storing the buggy at home somewhat easier.
In order to save on space all three wheels are quickly detachable so you may find that you are able to store the buggy in smaller places than you might think.
The name says it all. The Explorer is a more than capable buggy that will provide you with the opportunity of going that bit further. The sturdy frame and large pneumatic wheels will cope well when venturing off the beaten track, so this would be a great choice if you want to continue to enjoy the great outdoors with your little ones.
As a single buggy, the Explorer will get around the shops with ease and the good size shopping basket will mean that storage should not become an issue. However, once the second seat is attached to the rear, remember that you will loose the under seat storage since this space will be taken by your child’s legs.
This is an issue for a number of in-line buggies and Phil and Teds have over come this by producing additional pannier bags that attach themselves to the side of the buggy. The only issue with these bags is that it increases the width of the buggy somewhat.
Since the Explorer is no wider than any other single buggy you should be able to use public transport with relative ease, although if the second seat is attached to the rear, always be aware of any large steps to prevent any accidental knocks to the seat back.
Phil and Teds produce a travel bag that should make air travel easier and reduce the risk of damage.
Since the Phil and Teds Explorer is essentially a single buggy you’ll find that it collapses in to a smaller package that that of a dedicated double. This can obviously be useful in situations where space is at a premium for example car boots and storage cupboards.
Once folded both the wheels and bumper bar can be detached to reduce the size of the buggy to its minimum, again giving you further opportunity to store is in smaller spaces.
It is important to consider your storage requirements before you make a decision on which buggy to buy so it is recommended that you measure any areas that may pose a problem before you buy.
To make your life easier, Phil and Teds have produced a great selection of accessories for their buggies which are available at any good stockist.
Included with the explorer is a single rain cover which would not protect a child sitting in the extra seat. To overcome this limitation,a double rain cover is available as well as both a single and double UV cover to provide full protection from the sun.
For those long days out with the kids, you might find the clip on bottle/cup holder, food tray and tote bag come in very handy indeed.
Since with the extra seat attached, the storage for shopping in as good as lost, Phil and Teds have created panniers which makes it easier to carry extra shopping or baby necessities. These bags attach them selves to the side of the buggy in a similar way that you might attach a bag to a bicycle and make up for any space lost by the second seat.
The Explorer comes in a number of great colours, and to stretch your individuality hat little bit further, coloured cosy toes and seat pads are available and will do a great job in keeping your little ones warm and comfortable.
